How it All Started
From our first flight in 2004, to celebrating a remarkable milestone of 200 million passengers carried in 2019, our passion to make flying affordable to everyone, everywhere, is what fuels us to keep soaring higher. Looking ahead, only the sky is our limit.
The plan to launch Wizz Air began in June 2003 when six people with a wide range of airline expertise and successful track records teamed up with József Váradi, the Company’s Chief Executive Officer. In just three months, Wizz Air was a registered company ready to fly.
Our first flight took off on the 19th of May 2004 from Katowice to London Luton.
In the year of our 10th birthday, we received the delivery of our 50th Airbus A320 and we celebrated carrying 15 million passengers.
Following a decade of solid growth to become Central and Eastern Europe’s largest low-cost airline, WIZZ successfully completed an initial public offering on the 25th of February 2015, and was admitted to the London Stock Exchange.
WIZZ is named “Value Airline of the Year” by Air Transport World, a leading industry magazine.
WIZZ is growing rapidly, we launch WIZZ UK and open our UK office at London Luton.
The launch of WIZZ Youth Challenge for university and college students, where young people can demonstrate their entrepreneurial spirit, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills by solving a real-life business challenge set by our CEO.
Our 100th aircraft joins the WIZZ fleet and we are awarded the highest 7-star safety ranking from the world’s only safety and product rating agency AirlineRatings.com
We open a new 3,800 sq m state-of-the-art training centre in Budapest, an investment worth more than 30 million euros.
In less than four years, we doubled the amount of passengers and celebrated a remarkable milestone of 200 million passengers carried on our 15th birthday.
With 56.5g CO2 per passenger/km in May 2019, we are the airline with the smallest environmental footprint per passenger in Europe. Thanks to our young fleet of Airbus A320, A321CEO, and A321NEO aircraft, we expect to further reduce CO2 emissions per passenger by a third by 2030.
Airlineratings published their Best airlines 2020 ratings and WIZZ wins is the Best low cost airlinein Europe.
